Back pain is incredibly common, but there’s a lot of confusion around it. We have produced this helpful leaflet to inform and reassure you of how robust our spines are. It is a pdf format for easy download. Here are some quick facts we wish everyone knew:

1. Back pain is normal.
80% of people experience it—but most recover quickly without long-term issues.

2. Scans aren’t usually needed.
Serious findings show up in only about 5% of cases. Most back pain isn’t caused by something visible on a scan.

3. Pain doesn’t mean damage.
You can have pain without injury—stress, sleep, mood, and fitness all play a role.

4. Movement helps.
Staying active speeds up recovery. Bed rest can make things worse.

5. Surgery is rarely needed.
Exercise, education, and support are more effective for most people.
